SXSW Festival – Something By Something Else, Weird & Wi-Fi’d In ATX

The weirdness keeps on keeping on here in Austin for yet another day at SXSW — the South By Southwest Festival — which brings together the worlds of film, music and interactive for one big burnt orange rave – 24/7.

The PingWi-Fi contingent has drifted in and out between the three categories listed above for live music, film red carpets and blogger lounges.  All over the city, we have sampled some of the world’s best Wi-Fi access from the funky blended juices at Halcyon at 4th & Lavaca to the mysterious tribal elixirs of SquareRüt way out south on South Congress to the perennial favorite coffee at Mozart’s on the lake.

We’ve read some pretty impressive accounts of how the city and the Something By Something Else team has put together this huge Wi-Fi array with a combination of hotspots, radios, fiber and even old school copper lines to blanket the festival area.

Austin Wi-Fi has done rightXus at every turn, with excellent coverage throughout Austin city limits, allowing us to tweet until the cows come home and to upload more video and photos than you can shake a stick at – 7 pings, perfectamundountodo.

McConaughey, Sarah Green, Mike Nichols, “Mud”

M. Blash, Chloe Sevigny, “The Wait”

From the world of film, we captured Austin’s favorite son Matthew McConaughey … or “Matthew McConaLonghorn” as we tagged him until we found a keyboard with spellcheck. As for music, we have poked our head in on some pretty horrible death metal bands (is that redundant) and checked out some funky, swamp water sounding blues from Oklahoma … with some adventurous alternative/art rock mixed in. It’s all here! Why aren’t you?

Ha … overall, the experience is exhilarating, and nothing short of overwhelming. What to do next? So much to see? Each day we receive dozens of news releases on bands no one knows … yet. So, who do you see? Who will be this year’s breakout band? Hard to say … so much talent/so little time. But, we’ll give it the old college try here in The ATX.
