PingWi-Fi Joins Mile-High Club … Of Wi-Fi On American Flight

Finally!

I have boarded many a plane since the introduction of Wi-Fi in the sky … but apparently I have been leaving and landing in the wrong cities — no Wi-Fi to be had.

Until Sunday, traveling from Winston-Salem … to Atlanta … to Dallas.

But first, have you ever been stuck on a plane next to a network marketer — those artists previously known as pyramid scheme fanatics? Ha! I have.

Actually, it was a civil, interesting conversation, with a subtle sales pitch mixed in. Well played, Ms. Market America! She calls her self an un-franchisee. What the heck … here is the link:

I promise, as soon as I need a health drink or a colon cleansing, I will have my peeps call your peeps … I digress.

So … about Wi-Fi in the sky … How ironic. For the first time since about 2003, I had a laptop WITHOUT Wi-Fi capability balanced between my peanuts and ginger ale in a very small space. I was carrying my old, rugged workhorse — a Dell Latitude series laptop, with an add-on Wi-Fi card. Trouble is … I busted the Wi-Fi card a few days earlier in Winston-Salem.

So … the Wi-Fi was ready/willing and I couldn’t perform, so to speak.

Pity … my dinosaur Wi-Fi card from NetGear served me well — 6 years to be exact. I mourn it’s passing and gave it a viking burial (threw it in the Ohio River at a later date).

Cruising along at 40,000 feet on a beeline from Atlanta to DFW, I hopped on the Gogo Wi-Fi service using my iPhone.

The network coasted along at cruising altitude without any turbulence at first. I tuned in to my favorite Internet radio station — WOXY.com (Vintage) — and enjoyed several tunes.

Then silence! The MP3 version of WOXY music dropped off my radar screen … Not sure if it was a Gogo issue or WOXY. Ha! It gave me a queasy feeling when The Cure went dead on the flight. But, regardless, I reconnected in no time.

I rocked out … and oh yes, I so sent me some tweets! Maybe a little pricey for a short flight. But Gogo and American Airlines Wi-Fi were more than adequate, since i had no other air Wi-Fi to compare them too … yet … almost a perfect score … NEVER turn off The Cure … one point deducted — 6 pings.

So, although I didn’t get to post this blog from the air … it was conceived in the mile-high club of Wi-Fi.

Once I returned to Fort Worth, I hung out in my local Starbucks — the place where I first developed a Wi-Fi habit … for one day.

Then I turned back around and headed for another dirty gig in Louisville, KY.

More to come …

Know what I sayin?
