I seek out and ping Wi-Fi hotspots all over the country. It’s what I do. Likewise, I am always on the lookout for music. On my second night out in Louisville, I so scored some righteous tunes …
Here is how the deal went down. My hotel is actually in Indiana, just across The Ohio River from L-Ville. As I drove across the bridge toward Kentucky, I noticed a large crowd gathered at river’s edge — near the Louisville Bats’ minor league home, Louisville Slugger Park:
Mothlike, or maybe more like a bat out of hell, I steered toward the bright lights.
When I hit the minor traffic jam, I rolled down the window and asked some locals about the event. They told me it was a free concert featuring three local bands.
The locals were 1-for-2 at the plate so to speak. Yes it was a free concert, but no, it wasn’t just some local cover band.
To my surprise, Cracker took the stage, just as I strolled up toward the front of the crowd.
Don’t get me wrong, I opened my iPhone for a hailing frequency, hoping to beam up some quick tweets via Wi-Fi, before the concert. (No Wi-Fi available among the water gardens, jogging paths and soccer fields. Nor did I smuggle any Wi-Fi from the small yachts docked nearby …) So anyway … no Wi-Fi for the kid, but plenty of world-class music.
Later I learned that an arts group in Louisville features free concerts throughout the summer. Louisvillians were out in full force … lots of cool people, having cool fun in the summertime. No ‘Kentucky Doobie’ detected, fyi.
Here is info about Waterfront Wednesday, compliments of radio station WFPK, as the concert is called:
Here is some info. on Cracker:
And here is my take on the Cracker show … Excellent … lots of new stuff, and all the trademark favorites “Eurotrash Girl,” the alternative hit “Teen Angst” (“What the world needs now, is another folk singer, like I need a hole in my head …”) and the signature cover of “Pictures of Matchstick Men” reflecting Cracker’s roots back in Camper Van Beethoven.
I pushed my way to the front of the stage without hurting anyone, not even the little Eurotrash-girl wannabees … There was joy in L-Ville, but as for Wi-Fi, I struck out … Why no Wi-Fi at Waterfront, I ask you? One-point deduction … almost a perfect game — 6 out of 7 possible pings.
Wonder what else I will stumble upon in L-Ville?
Know what I sayin?
