PingWi-Fi Overwhelmed By Things With Cords At CES

“Don’t try to describe a KISS Concert if you’ve never seen one.”

That is the only Jimmy Buffet line I quote.  But it a gooder, so flows quite often … and it is perfect for Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas, CES.

It is basically a mid-size city under a convention roof — with one third of the inhabitants selling products, one third buying or gawking, and now the final third is mixed of traditional media and an army of bloggers. There are 20 bloggers clicking away beside me right now … and hundreds roaming the exhibit hall.

Ha yesterday, I walked and talked as fast as I could go, but didn’t see a quarter of the booths, or all of the various exhibit halls.  There are thousands of booths, with sometimes hundreds of products … and then each product has 4-5 new features.  Computers. Home theater.  Car Audio. GPS.  Photography.  Music.  You name it.

But today … I pledge to move faster and see more. By the way … no word yet from President-Elect Obama on my invitation to join us here — the industry that propelled his message.

Yesterday I probably spent more time in “Kodakville” than any other booth.  I use a Kodak camera, and believe it or not, it does a pretty decent job.  (See sideline football shots from New Year’s Eve.)  Oh this was cool.  I met the official number one blogger for Kodak.  Sweet gig.  I am trying to get her to join Twitter so we can follow each other.  Meantime, we blog away.

As for Wi-Fi … I sample three hotspots yesterday.

CES Blogger lounge — good people, excellent signal, password protected, 5 pings.  Bloggers are sequestered from “real journalists” ????

Palace Station Hotel & Casino — easy to get on, signal in lobby and rooms, slow connection.  Hundreds of e-mails yesterday, seeming took hundreds of minutes — 3 pings.

Bellagio — Duh!  Excellent Wi-Fi in the lobby where you can see world-class people watching … and even the glass artwork featured in the banner of this site.  I sample Wi-Fi all the way in the back around the meetings rooms too — 6 pings.

Small world at huge CES … I had been in the convention center about 2 minutes when I ran into Jannie from Huawei in Dallas … what are the odds, Vegas?  I must say, they have some cool toys.  Keep an eye on those guys.

Back to the sea of electronics.  But first quick note … Cirque du Soleil last night — Here’s what I liked most about the show: eclectic music, unbelievable diving, funky ballet, trippy lights, synchroniced swimming, provocative dance, scary acrobatics, creepy clowns, unbelievable athletes, highwire precision, engineer marvels for a stage!

Know what I sayin?
